As we are all well aware, the purpose of the pilot is to maintain safety around the Over Size Over Mass (OSOM) load. A big part of this is public safety and giving sufficient warning and direction to the oncoming traffic.
Guide them on how to prepare for the oncoming oversize load, but with so many things to concentrate on, truck speed, driver distraction or simply misjudging the distance, safety can be compromised.
If the pilot is too far in front, drivers pull over to wait but get frustrated and start driving again, or if the pilot is too close and there isn’t enough time to pull over safely, panic sets in and safety is compromised.
The O.P.P.S. system once set will support Pilots to maintain the best distance making one less thing to concentrate on making OSOM loads safer for all road users.
